I had been expecting the EX1 since its announcement in Feb and bought it the day before yesterday from Shop B at HK$3,690 with 2 extra batteries, 8G card, screen protection film, non-Samsung camera pouch and a big (enough for SLR) tripod. After 2 days of use, I have to admit that everything is up to expectation. (I used to be a semi-pro photographer and operated 4x5, 8x10 large format cameras years ago, and had years of experience w/DCs.) Only that a small mishap with the new camera led to some reservation, at least to the build quality of it. I dropped it inside the pouch(quite well-padded), about 2 feet high, onto the floor, by accident, only several hours after I bought it. Such happened many times with my previous DCs and never had any damage caused. But this time I found a small band of metal(should be aluminium) in front of the flash switch bulged out by about 1.5 to 2 mm and the flash could not pop-up. I took a closer look and found the left hand top corner of the camera was made of quite soft metal and was deformed a little by the drop(you have to examine meticulously to find out). Then I tried to press the swelled metal down before taking the camera for repair and amazingly the bulge was easily resumed and the flash worked normally again. The camera didn't seem affected and is still working very well. As an adult, I think I should not blame anyone, including Samsung for such an accident, no matter how small it is. Cameras are delicate instruments, we all know. But if Samsung should try to improve the build quality, or at least replace the shell material on the top left hand corner of the EX-1 with sturdier material, we, Samsung supporters, should all be grateful. Hi, Pat,
Sorry to hear about the story. At least we know something now ... er .. at the expense of your new camera. But at least it still works fine. If it suits you, I encourage you to send this account of the incident to Samsung via its website. They will then issue an automatic acknowledgement. Expect no feedback for a period longer than you would prefer. Send them the account repeatedly with an extra note saying that you're waiting for a reply. Say your request politely. They will reply eventually. That's my personal experience.

I have heard that if owning a Samsung camera make the person determined on anything, it is on not owning another Samsung again. That is a casual comment but may carry some truth in it.

A photographer from London who I met in Hong Kong had his Ricoh GX100 dropped for 3 feet to the ground. It came out unscathed and worked fine! I have yet to try the EX-1, but from what you mentioned it probably is no match for the GRD3's magnesium alloy body.

Happy shooting!

Hi, Tantan,
I think you were saying that the flash is dead.

1) Reset the camera setting to the factory default (look up the user's instruction on how)-- mind that this will delete any specific photographic settings on the camera which you may wish to keep;

2) If it doesn't work, make sure that you are using the Program mode and set the flash to compulsory (still, look up the user's instruction on how).

3) If the flash still doesn't work, contact Samsung of your country for maintenance.

A Real Hero

(Grip On Reality: This photo was taken on my way to work.  I was walking past trucks parking on a cul-de-sac when the ropes caught my attention.  The light was right, the colour was right and the criss-crossing pattern was perfect and I held up my GX200.  People passing by checked me out and wondered what could be made out of such a boring scene.  To me, the fun in photography is that the photographer makes something interesting out of what is not obvious to most at the scene.  The ropes tied in knots somehow reminded people I know who are in the grip of the recession) You must have also known a friend or two, or even yourself, being baffled by the spiral downturn of the economy.   Bank went bankrupt and the rich was faced with a shrinking wealth.  A friend of mine has just had his salary cut by over 10% and some of his colleagues started to be shed. But, wait. Was this done really for the sake of continuing the business? Or is there a factor or greed in it?  I wonder whether the

New Low Prices

The window shopping some hours ago has almost provoked my AgIDS illness.  Just in case you’re in Hong Kong or are coming here, and have the money to burn (All in HK$/ body only): GX200 = $3,280 GRD2 = $3,380 LX3 = $3,180 G10 = $3,280 Prices are available form a gear shop on the 1st floor of the Mongkok Computer Centre.   Besides these new low prices, I found that Wing Shing Photo (55-57Sai Yeung Choi St., MK Tel: 2396 6886/ 91-95 Fa Yuen St., MK  Tel: 2396 6885) is offering a Sony A700 + Carl Zeiss Lens package for HK$9,980 (hopefully, a bargain will make it some hundreds cheaper).

Eye Contact

(Leica D-lux 5) The digital era may make it easier to end up with fave shots. Even lousy photos may be turned likable after a few clicks in the post-processing workflow. But if digital advancement or amendments have any bearing on the cultivation of personal style, no photographers will need to discover his or her own photographer’s eye. Undoutedly, this is out of the question. Only with a trained photographer’s eye can we give a thinking gaze and capture an eternal moment, in our unique style. Style is the soul of a great photo. A few posts have been written in GXG to touch on the topic of photographer’s eye. Instead of finding an answer, which would require academic discussions, the posts are intended to give my general reflections and spark interests in moving towards further exploration of the topic.  The posts can be viewed after the links: 1) Photographer's Eye: Storytelling 2) Photographer's Eye: Little Show of Observing 3) Photographer's Eye: Sight-Worthy 4
